This record-setting amount by a lottery winner was used multiple times to bail McDow out of jail, where he was facing and evading various charges.
The bail payments by Holmes included $3 million, followed by $6 million, and then $12 million for McDow's subsequent arrests, reaching $21 million altogether.

Durst was initially accused of murdering his wife in 2003, with his bail set at $1 billion.
However, after skipping bail and being re-arrested for tampering with evidence, his bail was increased to $3 billion. Durst was later acquitted of the murder charge.
