Who plays the lottery more: men or women?

A study in the "Journal of Gambling Studies" in 2013 showed that gender is a significant predictor of lottery gambling, with men showing a 64% increase over women in the number of days they played the lottery.

It was also found that 55% of men are likely to play the lottery compared to 42% of women.

Another study by Vision Critical in 2013 supported these findings, revealing that 55% of men regularly put in lottery tickets, whereas only 42% of women have a lottery habit.

This difference is attributed to men's greater inclination towards risk-taking.

However, some studies show different trends in specific locations.

For instance, in Oregon, 52% of lottery players were women, and in Vermont, 54.5% of lottery players were women as per a 2018 Vermont Lottery Commission study.

In terms of lottery participation by income level, 53% of upper-income Americans play state and national lotteries, which is 13 percentage points more than the national average.
