John “Jack” Long, 77, of Fontana suffers from a condition in which excessive heat puts his life at risk.

In order to avoid bigger health problems, Long has to stay cool, and that’s exactly what he wanted to do when he entered a Cardenas Market in Fontana in mid-July.

A sweet tooth led to a cool prize when Jack Long visited the Cardenas store.

Long had one goal in mind: to buy popsicles to overcome the heat. In his way out, on a whim, he decided to buy one Powerball, one Mega Millions and one SuperLotto Plus ticket, something he had not done in a long time.

Days later, a friend of his told him about news that a local Cardenas store had sold the winning ticket of $60 million.

Calmly, Long checked his ticket and to his surprise, the numbers of the July 19 draw -- 10, 53, 17, 25, 45 and the Powerball 9 -- matched his.

Cardenas put up a copy of the winning check on their store wall.

“I didn’t think anything because you never think ‘It’s me,’” Long said. “I kept looking at my ticket over and over again."

"Finally I realized I was the winner. But I will not be the winner until I go to the ATM to get cash … that’s when I will be the real winner."

Jack signs for his check at the CA Lottery headquarters in San Bernardino.

The modest winner plans to put the money to good use. Long said during a press conference at the California Lottery headquarters in San Bernardino that he plans to create a foundation to help low-income students achieve their dreams.
