Happy EuroMillions winners thought their £1 million win was a scam

Ruth and Rob Giblin from Telford won a million pounds (US$1,085) in the EuroMillions lottery earlier this month, and talked to the National Lottery about their amazing experience.

The lucky couple from Shropshire celebrated scooping a £1 million jackpot after nearly missing out by forgetting to buy a ticket, and then thinking their win was a scam.

“The initial moment that we realised that we really were millionaires was when a guy phoned us back the following day and he confirmed everything,” said Ruth, a leisure centre supervisor.

“We've got no signal where we live - my signal’s rubbish on my phone. So I paced up and down the street for ages so I could get a signal!” she laughed, remembering how she tried to ring the number back to confirm the win.

She added: “I was sure it was a scam, but when I saw it was the correct number for Camelot, I tried to phone it, only to find they were not yet open.

"Instead of waiting around, we decided to still go swimming. Although it was clearly all we could think about as every so often, Rob would stop and say, ‘what if it is real?”

Even after they were notified the couple were still in a state of disbelief.

Ruth, 44, and husband Rob, 48, landed the huge windfall after matching one of the UK Millionaire Maker codes on the Euromillions last month.

So what will they buy? Rob explained, “Treats! Now there's a few little treats. I bought a new car. I had to buy a new iPad. And I got a watch, a nice watch.”

They will get some presents for their children, but apart from that they both said they intend keeping them very grounded.
