POLL: Running To The Store - How Soon After The Game Do You Check Your Tickets?

PHOTO: Ryan Van Velzer /Cronkite News

How long do you take to check your lottery tickets? I'm always hurry to get down to the store to see how much I've won, especially if at a quick glance I think the numbers are a close match with mine.

Some players wait until the next game to buy their new tickets. They get the previous game's results checked then too. Other players check immediately the game has finished. When do you get your tickets checked? Share your times with us!

TIP: Don't forget to always have your tickets checked by machine. Human error, like mistaking a 7 for a 1, could be disastrous when millions are at stake.

The Email Says You've Won $5 Million: Now, Please Pay This $500 Advance Claims Fee

That's how the scam starts. An ordinary email telling you that your win has passed through to the accounting department, but the legal team require a 'claim fee' or deposit so they can send it you.

It takes many forms, but the essence of this email or letter is that you have to pay up front to get your win. To make it look legitimate, these scammers often throw in some information to make it look real:

- The draw number, date of the draw, the winning numbers and the jackpot amount.

- A real address of the lottery organisation.

So here's three questions you must ask yourself before shouting out in glee:

What On Earth Is Happening To Mega Millions Sales?

Players are fleeing the USA Mega Millions in droves. And all because the organisation increased the odds of playing. Last October 19th they increased the field of 5 numbers from 1 through 56, up to 1 through 75.

The odds rocketed up from 1-in-176 million to 1-in-259 million.

The proof of a serious drop in player sales is here in the graph. This shows two similar jackpots, one before the number change, and one after. Take a look at the ticket sales. They show a big slump:

Now You'll Never Lose Your Lottery Tickets Again, As Long As They're In Your Wallet

The Smart Wallit Pro tracks your wallet and you can use it for airport luggage too.

It's smaller than a credit card and fits into your wallet in the same way.

But the moment your wallet - and the lottery tickets inside - goes more than the distance you set for it, the Smart Wallit Pro lets your smartphone know with a message.

REVEALED: How Woman Winner From Distant Outback Orders Lottery Tickets Hassle-Free

A couple of days ago I talked about using your local lottery store instead of online sales.

I made the point that it was harder - and sometimes impossible - to use the Silver Lotto System online - unless you wanted to keep setting up the system each time.

However some games CAN be ordered online, and Cheryl wrote to explain how she does this for her Australian lottery game.

If your game works the same way, you might be able to save some gas and time!

LOOK 'N LEARN: A Hard-Won Lesson From "Lottery Ticket" The Film

Rotten Tomatoes gave this film 35% rating - but there's a more important lesson here.

There's a theme to this delightful but cliched 2010 comedy, and it's one that the whole film is built around: Kevin tries to regain ownership of his winning $370M Mega Millions ticket. Took him a while.

TIP: Do what Kevin didn't. Get irrevocable ownership of your winning lottery ticket by signing it! Your signature makes any ticket a legal document and will save you a lot of pain if you lose it.
