Why this Virginia University math major DIDN'T use his number skills to win a $1 million lottery jackpot

Brian Donohue knows a thing or two about numbers as a Mathematics major at the University of Virginia.

It was six numbers in the Virginia Lottery’s Bank a Million game that resulted in the Fairfax County man winning the game’s top prize of $1 million after taxes.

But the math major didn’t use his number skills to pick the winning combination. His mother bought the ticket for the December 22 Bank a Million drawing at the Giant Food store in Oakton.

He received the ticket as a present in his Christmas stocking. The winning numbers were 4-8-21-25-32-35, and the Bonus Ball number was 15.

The winning ticket matched all six of the first numbers exactly, which means the Bonus Ball number wasn’t needed to win!

Brian said the winnings will go to pay his tuition.

ABOUT: Bank a Million is played exclusively in Virginia, with drawings Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. The top prizes ($1 million, $500,000 and $250,000) are calculated so that winners receive the prize amount after federal and state tax withholdings.
