The weird way 84-year-old Red Sox fan chose his $100,000 lottery win numbers

Jim Aylward, Jr. of Templeton won a $100,000 grand prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Mass Cash game.

When you’re celebrating the Red Sox winning their fourth World Series title in 15 years, you do the obvious when it comes to playing the lottery.

Jim Aylward Jr., 84, made his selection by playing the jersey numbers worn by five key members of the Red Sox’ 2018 world championship winning team.

And won $100,000 in the Mass Cash game!

Aylward’s winning combination of 11-16-19-22-25 represents the numbers of two young stars, a dazzling outfielder, a starting pitcher and the series MVP.

He picked the jerseys of Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rick Porcello and Steve Pearce for this drawing.

These numbers matched the five numbers selected in the Monday, November 5 Mass Cash drawing for the great grandad who has five children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

"When the team started to get really good, those were my favorite players," Aylward told the Boston Globe. "I've been playing those numbers for quite a while."

Aylward, who claimed his prize Wednesday, November 7 at Lottery headquarters, purchased his winning ticket at Cumberland Farms, 163 Patriots Rd. (Route 2A) in East Templeton. 

ABOUT: Mass Cash tickets are $1 each and drawings take place seven nights a week.  Players choose five numbers from 1 through 35.  Matching all five numbers results in winning the game’s $100,000 top prize (less tax withholdings).
