After the win, Marie decided to give 10% of her winnings to the church, the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. After taxes, the amount was $1.5 million, the largest contribution promised to a church from a lottery win.
Up till then, the biggest donation had been a $100,000 contribution in Boston. She followed through, but there were serious problems looming.
