Mega Millions $502 million jackpot shared by California and Florida
Lucky ticket-holders in California and Florida will be celebrating the holiday season in style after matching all six numbers drawn in Friday night’s Mega Millions® drawing.
The draw resulted in the white balls 9, 22, 26, 41 and 44, plus the gold Mega Ball 19. The winners will share the prize of $502 million ($252.0 million cash), which is the eleventh-largest jackpot in the game’s history. The final jackpot amount was higher than the estimate due to strong sales.
It’s the first Mega Millions jackpot win since the incredible $1.337 billion prize won in Illinois on July 29. It’s also the first time in almost exactly five years that multiple tickets have shared a single jackpot – on October 13, 2017, winners in Michigan and Rhode Island split a $42 million prize.
In addition to the jackpot wins, there were plenty of other winners in the October 14 drawing. Three tickets matched all five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize.
A Texas player added the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase), which was 2X on Friday night, so that ticket is worth $2 million. The other two tickets, sold in New Jersey and North Carolina, win the standard $1 million prize.
For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 25 tickets have a third-tier win. Of those, seven also included the optional Megaplier and are worth $20,000 each; the remaining 18 win the standard $10,000 prize.
In total, there were 1,054,198 winning tickets sold across all nine prize tiers for the October 14 drawing, including the two jackpot-winning tickets.
In this 22-draw jackpot run, which began with the August 2 drawing, there were more than 13.8 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 25 second-tier prizes of at least $1 million.
Those big $1 million-plus prizes were won in 16 different states across the country: California, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.
This is the sixth Mega Millions jackpot won to date this year. The fun started with a $426 million prize in California on January 28, followed by $128 million in New York on March 8, $110 million in Minnesota on April 12 (that state’s very first Mega Millions jackpot win), $20 million in Tennessee on April 15, and $1.337 billion in Illinois on July 29.
The jackpot for the next drawing on Tuesday, October 18, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($10.0 million cash).
