The mother of Newport musician LeRoy White claimed the $336.4M Powerball prize in 2012.
The Rhode Island winner is from the area where the most Powerball tickets are sold, according to this infographic by data scientist Seth Kadish at Vox.
The top Powerball selling states.
The data is adjusted for population differences and weekly sales fluctuations, and here’s the list of the top selling areas:
Rhode Island (39.9 tickets per 1,000)
Delaware (39.0 tickets per 1,000)
New Hampshire (36.5 tickets per 1,000)
New Jersey (35.2 tickets per 1,000)
Florida (33.6 tickets per 1,000)
This graph also shows that sales also climb when the Powerball jackpot rises.
Kadish also listed the lowest-selling states for Powerball too:
Washington (11.5 tickets per 1,000)
Texas (12.6 tickets per 1,000)
Arkansas (14.2 tickets per 1,000)
Oregon (15.2 tickets per 1,000)
Ohio (15.4 tickets per 1,000)
OUR TAKE: If you live in the top states, it's important to carefully choose your playing days to reduce the risk of splitting your prize with other players. If you don't want to share your prize with lots of other winners, you need to play when they don't.
When you play the less popular days - often the mid-week games - you reduce the chance of sharing a major prize.
For example, seven Mega Millions winners shared a $1.75 million prize. That was only $250,000 each. Not bad, but certainly a lot less than claiming almost $2 million for yourself!
And in the same game 92 winners received $10,000 each, but of course it could have been $920,000 for one player alone.
To increase your share, play when others don't.
Find out from your local lotto store which days are the LEAST popular for your game. You can do this by just chatting casually to them and asking which day is the busiest.
Then play that least used day of the week as often as you can.
