Clinton Coffey had gone into a newsagent in Romney Marsh, Kent, on Monday this week for a can of juice.
Feeling around in his pockets he realised he only had a £1 coin and his bank card.
He was about to pay for the juice with the £1 when he thought better of it and decided to save it for his visit to the gym - where you need a £1 coin for a locker.
The ticket was purchased at St Mary’s Bay Superstore, in Jefferstone Lane, Romney Marsh, UK.
Instead, he paid for the drink with his bank card - but decided to treat himself to a scratchcard as well.
He bought a £10 scratchcard called a £4 Million Blue, which offers a 1 in three chance of scooping a prize, from £10 to £4m.
The 22-year-old heating engineer, however, couldn’t believe it when he started scratching off the silver panels on the card.

The first game on the card netted him what he thought was £30 after he mistakenly thought he had three £10 wins - which were actually £10,000 wins.
Clinton added: “I was pretty happy with that £30 win.

“Then I played the next game and I revealed £10,000, and instead of going totally crazy with excitement some rational part of my brain kicked in and I thought ‘£10,030 is a weird amount’.
“So I went back and completely removed all the foil from the first game to see it wasn’t £30, but £30,000!”
He then played the rest of the games on the card and in the end uncovered a total of ten £10,000 prizes - netting him a total of £100,000 (US$152,000).
